PrivatBank has launched a "Subscriptions" service where customers pay a fixed monthly fee and receive cashback and discounts on a specific list of services — from streaming platforms to fuel. The model is not new globally, but for Ukrainian banking this is the first mass example of a paid subscription for the bank's own discounts, rather than for a partner's product.
The Logic of a Simple Example
For 129 UAH per month, customers receive up to 200 UAH cashback on streaming services, up to 100 UAH on delivery, up to 3 UAH/liter discount on WOG fuel, and doctor teleconsultations. The bank claims that for 95% of active users, the benefits will exceed the subscription cost. The key word here is "active" — the service works for those who already regularly pay for Netflix, ChatGPT, delivery services, and WOG fuel.
Where the Fine Print Hides
If a person uses only one or two services from the list rather than all of them, the actual savings could turn out to be lower than 129 UAH. Cashback on delivery up to 100 UAH requires regular mail orders, the fuel discount is tied only to one gas station network, and teleconsultations — up to five per month — are valuable only for those who actually use online medical services.
"According to our calculations, for 95% of active users, the benefits received during the month will significantly exceed the cost of the subscription itself," said Dmytro Musienko, member of PrivatBank's board for retail business.
The phrase "active users" is key. The bank calculates benefits for those who already spend money across all service categories. For other customers, the subscription could become another automatic payment that is easy to forget to cancel.
Why the Bank Needs This
By tying customers to partner networks — WOG, Silpo, specific postal operators — the bank receives not only the monthly subscription fee, but also data on consumer habits and commissions from partners for the traffic they send. This is a typical model for banks seeking to become an ecosystem rather than just a payment account provider.
The practical conclusion is simple: before subscribing to "Subscriptions," you should calculate your own monthly spending in each service category over the past three months. If the sum covers or exceeds 129 UAH — the subscription truly saves money. If not — it's just another expense masquerading as a discount.
