The Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories reported that a new school will be built in the village of Posad-Pokrovske in Kherson region, combining a school, a kindergarten and an open public space. The building will be erected on the site of the school that was destroyed in 2022.
About the project
The project was prepared by the urban bureau Big City Lab on commission from the Service for Recovery and Infrastructure Development in Kherson Oblast. The chief architect is Pavlo Peker. The school will consist of five blocks: a central building with shared spaces, a kindergarten, a primary school, a gymnasium and a sports hall. The site includes a radiation shelter and barrier-free solutions.
Spaces and services
The facility will be accessible to the entire community: the assembly hall, sports hall and a library-coworking space will serve as venues for events and meetings. The dining area will be organized as a modern cafeteria with options for indoor and outdoor dining. The project also provides for an oven for baking bread, since there is no bakery in the village.
Ground-floor rooms will have two entrances — from the inside and from the street. Some classrooms will have access to their own outdoor play areas. The complex will include an internal courtyard.
History and destruction
Posad-Pokrovske is located on the border of Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts, about 35 km from Kherson. Before the full-scale invasion, 2,240 people lived in the village. After the 2022 occupation, the settlement ended up on the front line: almost half of the 940 houses were destroyed, and the school, the community center with a library and a cinema hall were damaged.
By November 2022 the village was subjected to more than 350 shellings daily; as a result all communal and private buildings were damaged.
