What Xiaomi announced

Xiaomi has officially confirmed the launch of the compact tracker Xiaomi Tag; the full presentation will take place on 28 February 2026 in Barcelona. The device will be shown alongside the flagship Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the company announced on the social network X.

Technical details and compatibility

According to an official image and a leak on Xiaomi France's site, the tracker weighs about 10 g and has a thickness of 7.2 mm. The device will be powered by a standard CR2032 battery. The base version, according to current information, does not support UWB (Ultra Wideband); a UWB-equipped version may be introduced later. The estimated price in the EU is about €18.

Why it matters

The appearance of an inexpensive tracker from a major manufacturer has several practical implications. First, wider availability of item-finding technology: more people and businesses will be able to use trackers without large expenses. Second, it creates price pressure in a segment dominated by Apple's AirTag, and may push competitors to improve features or lower costs.

However, the technical compromise — the lack of UWB in the base model — means some precise locating scenarios (for example, determining direction indoors) will not be available immediately. This is an expected design strategy to keep the price low.

Competitive context

Recently Apple released the second-generation AirTag with improved sound and greater range. The arrival of the Xiaomi Tag means increased competition in the low- and mid-price segments — the outcome could benefit consumers: better functionality or lower prices in upcoming releases.

What this means for Ukraine

For Ukrainian users and businesses, price is not the only important factor. Affordable trackers can be useful for volunteer networks, small businesses, and logistics operations — they reduce the cost of asset monitoring. At the same time, wider availability increases the need for careful attention to privacy and account settings, as well as checking compatibility with Apple's Find My and Google Find services.

Summary

Xiaomi Tag is a bet on mass adoption: a light and cheap tracker that could shift the balance of power in the market and expand the toolkit for users and businesses. Now the task for manufacturers and regulators is to ensure that widespread distribution works in favor of citizens' safety and privacy.
