Balance Between Success and Faith: the Example of Qatar
Qatar’s experience, having successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, showed the whole world: it is possible to be a deeply religious country and at the same time a leader of civilizational progress. Qataris proved that Islam — it is not «a burden», but an adornment of a successful person. They managed to integrate their canons into a global event without betraying traditions, while remaining open to the world.
This balance is also close to Ukrainian Muslims. Ukraine, with its hospitable and freedom-loving spirit, has always been a place where Islam flourished precisely thanks to an atmosphere of freedom.
Religious Duty — Defend the Homeland
Since the beginning of Russian aggression in 2014, Muslims of Ukraine have clearly defined their position. The Congress of Muslims of Ukraine issued a fatwa (religious ruling): the defense of Ukraine is a sacred duty before the Almighty. This is not merely a political choice; it is a matter of faith.
- The path of the martyr: According to Muslim beliefs, one who dies defending their land from an invader dies a martyr for the faith.
- Muslim battalions: Today hundreds of believers, including former mufti Said Ismagilov, have traded their religious garments for the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ pixel camouflage.
«Islam flourishes where people are free. We supported Ukrainians' desire to determine their own fate, because it corresponds to our religious principles»
— Tarik Sarhan, Islamic scholar
Religion as a Counter to Manipulation
While Russia tried to use the church as an instrument of occupation and to «channel» its narratives into people's hearts, Ukraine's Muslim community demonstrated immunity to such manipulations. Islam in Ukraine today is about honesty in financial dealings, the strength of family ties, and uncompromising devotion to freedom.
Today Ukraine is showing the world a unique example of interfaith unity, where the common goal — freedom — unites people of different faiths in the struggle against a common enemy.
