Wreath Threatened with Extinction Receives State Status

The Culture Ministry has included a feathered wedding wreath from Velykyi Kliuchiv in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The problem is that only a few craftswomen remain who know how to make it.

In the village of Velykyi Kliuchiv in Ivano-Frankivsk region, there is a tradition that only a few people physically maintain. A feathered wedding wreath is not a souvenir or reconstruction: on the eve of a wedding, craftswomen still decorate the heads of the bride and bridesmaids with their own hands. Now this practice is officially protected by the state — the Ministry of Culture included it in the National Register of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.

What is this wreath

The wreath has a large round shape resembling a crown and is combined with beads and an embroidered costume into a cohesive wedding ensemble. According to UNN, it symbolizes a girl's transition to a new social status and is one of the most solemn elements of the wedding ceremony in this particular village. The secrets of its creation are passed down between female craftswomen from the villages of Velykyi Kliuchiv and Myshyn: each wreath is handmade from natural feathers and natural materials.

"Another priceless gem of the cultural heritage of Prykarpattia has received state recognition. This unique wedding attribute is a living tradition passed down from generation to generation"

— Department of Culture of Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration

Why status is not a guarantee

Inclusion in the register documents the existence of the tradition but does not obligate funding for its transmission. According to local media, only a few craftswomen remain in Ivano-Frankivsk region who have mastered the technique of creating the Kliuchiv wreath. The folklore and ethnographic collective "Kliuchivski vizerunky" at the village's Community Center is attempting to preserve the tradition — it recreates the wedding ceremony and introduces it to a wider audience.

For comparison: the National Register of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine contains over 100 elements and is expanded by several orders per year. Ukraine has contributed four traditions to the UNESCO list — Petrykivka painting, Kosiv ceramics, Crimean Tatar ornament "Ornek," and pysanka.

  • Form: large round "crown" made of natural feathers
  • Function: worn by the bride and bridesmaids immediately before the wedding
  • Bearers: several craftswomen from Velykyi Kliuchiv and Myshyn
  • Promotion: the "Kliuchivski vizerunky" collective at the local Community Center

State status documents value — but does not create new craftswomen. If "Kliuchivski vizerunky" does not attract apprentices over the next decade, the register will survive, but the tradition itself will not.
