Ukrzaliznytsia in December launched night train No. 7/346–347/8 Uzhhorod–Vienna composed of sleeping cars from European railways. The route runs along the newly built euro-gauge line through Hungary with a stop in Budapest and a morning arrival in Vienna.

Schedule and duration of the trip

The train departs Uzhhorod at night and arrives in Vienna in the morning; in the opposite direction the service departs in the evening and arrives the next morning. Crossing the border via this route takes less time than traveling between Uzhhorod and Kyiv.

Transfers in Budapest and Chop

In Budapest the train will stop at Ferihegy station with access to Ferenc Liszt International Airport. And Budapest–Kelenföld station is a convenient transport hub in the Hungarian capital with an easy transfer to trains on the new metro line

In addition to Budapest, passengers are provided with a coordinated transfer in Chop to service No. 749/750, which connects Uzhhorod and Kyiv. This allows travelers to quickly reach the Ukrainian capital from the Austrian direction.

New regional connections in Zakarpattia

Berehove has also received a direct connection to Budapest: from December 14 train No. 36/35,32/37 will run via Nyíregyháza and Ferihegy station, continuing through Chop to Berehove. In addition, an extra regional train No. 644/647 Uzhhorod–Záhony via Chop will allow passengers in Záhony to transfer to regular Hungarian services toward Budapest.

Infrastructure

Ukrzaliznytsia signed an agreement with the Austrian company Voestalpine Rail Technology GmbH to supply 10,000 tonnes of rails. This will allow major repairs on about 80 km of track and improve the route's capacity.

Context

The launch of the night service was the result of months-long cooperation between Ukrzaliznytsia and partners from Hungary and Austria — MÁV and ÖBB. The new routes and coordinated transfers are in line with the strategy to integrate Ukrainian railways with European infrastructure and are intended to simplify international transport from western Zakarpattia.
