"Why Hair 'Doesn't Grow': It's Not About Speed, But the Math of Breakage"

Hair grows about a centimeter per month regardless of effort, but almost everyone loses this growth due to split ends. A hairdresser-colorist explains why the battle for "accelerating growth" is chasing a myth, and the real work happens at the level of preserving the length you already have.

It's simple arithmetic that few people actually calculate. Hair grows approximately 1 cm per month — this is a biological constant that neither masks, vitamins, nor special shampoos can change. Over a year, that's up to 12 cm. But look at people who have been "growing out their hair for years" and remain at the same length. The problem isn't production — it's loss.

Hairdresser-colorist Oleksandra Sorokina explains in a comment to UNN the mechanism that most people confuse with "poor growth."

The most common problem isn't slow growth itself, but hair brittleness. On average, it grows 1 cm per month, but damaged ends can break off and it may visually seem like the length is stagnating

Where exactly is the leak

If hair adds a centimeter each month and the ends break off by the same centimeter each month — you get zero as a result. A person does everything "right" for growth while simultaneously doing nothing to preserve the already produced product. It's like earning money and not noticing you're spending the same amount on commissions.

Sorokina names the basic set of factors that determine whether a grown centimeter reaches the ends or breaks along the way:

  • avoiding high temperatures during drying and styling;
  • careful combing without sharp movements;
  • avoiding constant tight hairstyles that damage the structure;
  • proper nutrition with vitamin D, protein, iron, and zinc.

Trimming doesn't accelerate growth — and that's normal

Another common misconception is the expectation that regular trimming will make hair grow faster. This is physically impossible: growth occurs from the root, and what happens at the ends has no effect on how fast the follicle works.

Trimming itself doesn't accelerate hair growth because hair grows from the root. But timely trimming of split ends can visually increase density and preserve the already grown length

The logic here is different: trimming doesn't add centimeters, but it prevents losses. A split end splinters upward along the shaft, and if not cut in time, the damage spreads further, taking more length than the scissors would have.

Realistic numbers instead of Instagram expectations

Sorokina immediately lowers the bar of inflated expectations created by advertising videos about "growth acceleration products."

You need to have realistic expectations because in a few months hair can grow 2, maximum 4 cm — this is under favorable circumstances

So even under ideal conditions, this isn't the result that's visible to the naked eye in a couple of months. Anyone expecting dramatic change in a quarter will be disappointed regardless of how many specialists they hire.

What you actually need to do

According to the hairdresser, the basic set of home care consists of four items: shampoo, conditioner, mask, and heat protection — selected for your specific scalp and hair type, not randomly based on advertising. Ideally — with selection by a specialist, since there's no universal solution here.

The main mistake to avoid: focusing exclusively on stimulating growth and ignoring the condition of the length you already have. Hair that grows but immediately breaks off is running in place.

The question you should ask yourself before buying another "growth acceleration product": is the problem really the speed, or is it that what grows doesn't survive to the desired length?
