Kyivavtodor has begun developing design documentation for a major overhaul that will reinforce the Southern Bridge, said the corporation's general director, Oleksandr Fedorenko. The decision was made due to changes in the intensity and nature of loads on the crossing.

The bridge needs reinforcement it cannot withstand the loads

According to management, the crossing was designed and built for different load specifications; it was opened in 1990. Current traffic flows exceed those requirements, and the steel orthotropic deck can no longer withstand such loads.

Work plan

The first stage is the preparation of design documentation for strengthening the structure. After that, a major overhaul is planned to remove the need for returning to repairs in the coming years.

Other bridge projects

Reinforcement of the Metro Bridge is planned to be completed by autumn 2025; thanks to the new supports the crossing will be able to function for about 20 years before a full reconstruction. At the same time, work continues on the Northern bridge crossing over the Desenka, and it will continue into 2026.

Paton Bridge

Repairs to the Paton Bridge have not yet begun. In 2021 the bridge was included in the "Great Construction" project, with the Service for Recovery and Development of Infrastructure in Kyiv Oblast designated as the client. By order of the KMVA in January 2023, Kyivavtodor officially assumed the functions of the client, but work still has not started.
