Ukrainian company PG Robotics has launched the updated Lucky Strike-1.5 unmanned aerial vehicle into serial production. At first glance — a typical upgrade: more powerful engines, a new power system, greater payload capacity. But the main change lies not in the numbers, but in the type of work the drone can now take over from humans.

Mine-laying without a sapper in the field

Remote mine installation is a task that traditionally requires human presence in the zone of enemy fire, surveillance drones and artillery. The Lucky Strike-1.5, with three suspension points and the ability to carry up to nine mines per sortie, offers an alternative: the sapper remains in cover, while the minefield is formed remotely, drone after drone.

This is not a revolution — similar concepts are already being tested by other manufacturers. But scaling such an approach to serial production means that remote mine-laying ceases to be an experiment and becomes a routine tactical option for units.

What changed technically

An important practical detail: the new version is compatible with the ground station of the previous model. For units already operating Lucky Strike, this means no need to retrain operators or purchase new infrastructure — the platform scales without additional training logistics costs.

Versatility as a business model

The manufacturer positions the drone not as a narrowly specialized mining device, but as a multifunctional platform: cargo delivery, unit support, fire missions, relay work. For Ukrainian defense industry, this is a typical strategy — one body, several payload modules, which allows reducing production cycles and lowering maintenance costs in field conditions.

The question is not whether the drone is technically capable of carrying nine mines, but whether this configuration will withstand real operating conditions — wind, electronic warfare obstacles and the need for precise drops on designated coordinates without direct line of sight from the operator.

If PG Robotics confirms the declared characteristics in combat conditions, not just in tests, remote mine-laying risks becoming as mundane a front-line tool as FPV drones are now for striking enemy equipment.
