The Office of the Prosecutor General reported on September 2 about an armed attack on an SBU operational investigation group during a search as part of proceedings regarding a terrorist act organized by the FSB of Russia. As a result of the incident, there are wounded individuals, the attackers have been detained, and a pre-trial investigation is underway.

What happened during the search

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, SBU officers were conducting urgent investigative actions to collect and document evidence in the case of an FSB terrorist act. During the search at one of the addresses, a group of individuals carried out an armed attack on the investigation group.

  • The attackers blocked the roadway with vehicles, attempting to obstruct the conduct of investigative actions.
  • A special unit of the SBU's Center for Special Operations "Alpha" was involved to stop the attack.
  • During the suppression of armed resistance, law enforcement officers used weapons.

"As a result of the incident, there are wounded among the individuals who offered resistance. The attackers have been detained. During initial investigative actions, it was established that the detainees belong to one of the units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Weapons and documents were seized from them," the Office of the Prosecutor General reported.

Legal qualification

Under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General, a pre-trial investigation has been initiated into threats and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer

Case context

The SBU together with the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense reported on September 2 about the prevention of an FSB terrorist act against a Russian opposition figure. According to sources, this concerns Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander for combat operations of the Russian Volunteer Corps, whose disappearance was reported by the RVC on September 1.

It was within the framework of investigative actions in this case that the SBU conducted the search during which the attack occurred. The question of the detainees' affiliation with a specific unit of the Defense Forces and their motives remains the subject of investigation.
