Why this news matters now

In 2025 the mining and metallurgical group Metinvest announced the launch of production for 11 new types of metal products. This is not just a catalogue expansion: over four years of full-scale war the company has already developed 433 new items, adapting production to the requirements of EU markets and neighboring countries. For Ukraine such moves mean jobs, export revenue and technological resilience of supply chains.

What exactly was launched

Kametstal became the leader in the number of new products. The enterprise mastered four types of continuously cast billets sized 335×400 mm in various steel grades for the production of tube stock. A separate direction is rebar products for European markets: for Poland production of B500SP according to local standards has been established, for Romania — B500C with increased ductility, designed for seismic-resistant structures.

Another important innovation from Kametstal is grinding balls with a diameter of 100 mm of the fifth hardness group according to DSTU 8538. They are used in drum mills for crushing ore and concentrates, which increases the efficiency of mining production.

Zaporizhstal launched three new items: hot-rolled coils sized 1.8×1045 mm of grade S235JR, steel products in grade S235JRC for cold forming (in accordance with EN 10025-2) and cold-rolled sheets of grade S280GD to the euro standard EN 10346. These coils are used to make thin-walled structures, load-bearing façade elements and decorative parts.

Promet Steel (Bulgaria) started production of rebar to the standard MKS 1021:2019 for North Macedonia — ribbed bars suitable for welding that provide reliable bonding with concrete.

What the company says

"Expanding the product range is a response to the market and a challenge of our time. We orient ourselves to EU standards and regional requirements to ensure the resilience of supply chains and the competitiveness of our partners,"

Why this is important for Ukraine

In short: compliance with Euro standards, export diversification and increased industrial autonomy. First, producing rebar and coils to EN and local regulations opens access to EU and neighboring markets without additional reprocessing. Second, mastering grinding balls and billets in various steel grades strengthens domestic chains for the mining and metallurgical industries. Third, plans for DR coils for green steel and premium feedstock for pig iron signal preparation for a more environmentally friendly and technologically advanced re-equipment.

Context and consequences

According to the press service, these steps are taking place in conditions where export geography and standards are becoming a key factor of competitiveness. Industry analysts point out that production to European norms and investments in new types of raw materials are markers of partners' trust and the foundation for future contracts. For the state it is important that such declarations are accompanied by signed agreements and infrastructural support.

What’s next

Metinvest plans to develop DR products for green steel and premium raw materials for pig iron. This is a direction that could become a bridge between Ukrainian metallurgy and international initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint. Now the question is for the market and partners: will these technical achievements turn into long-term contracts and investments?
