At the talks between Ukraine and the United States in Switzerland, they discussed conditions that would facilitate a ceasefire and the implementation of subsequent actions, not the ceasefire terms themselves. This was stated in an interview with LIGA.net by a member of the Ukrainian delegation, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Hnatov.

The journalist asked whether all the points of the peace plan would be implemented before or after a ceasefire, and also what place a truce has in the scheme the parties are discussing.

Hnatov noted that the terms of a truce can be discussed only between Ukraine and the aggressor country, Russia.

"The talks in Geneva were between Ukraine and the United States and were more about conditions that would facilitate the process of a ceasefire and the implementation of further steps"

– explained the Chief of the General Staff.

Timing of a possible ceasefire

Hnatov also told LIGA.net that ending the war with a just peace and reparations from Moscow is impossible before the end of 2025. At the same time, under certain conditions a ceasefire could occur in a matter of days or weeks.

Context

In the same interview Hnatov said that the Geneva talks did not concern the reduction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Additionally, the military official said that they did not discuss issues that do not directly concern Kyiv, nor those that should be decided by presidents.
