Oleg Luzhny has taken over the Ukraine U-19 youth national team, replacing Dmytro Mykhailenko in the position. The UAF press service reports this. At first glance, it appears to be a routine coaching rotation. However, there is a detail that makes this news more interesting than the standard "new coach appointed."
Since January 2024, Luzhny has headed the UAF's Professional Football Committee — a structure that oversees club competitions, licensing, and regulatory matters. Now the same person will simultaneously manage the training process of the youth national team. The combination of administrative and coaching positions at the top of federation management is rare even for Ukrainian football, despite its personnel shortage.
What Happened to the Previous Coach
Dmytro Mykhailenko was not dismissed or forced to resign — he was promoted. The UAF Executive Committee appointed him head coach of the U-21 national team, the older age category. This is not a crisis of confidence in the specialist, but rather a classic advancement of personnel within the system: a coach who demonstrated results with U-19 moves to work with players one step closer to the national team.
The logic is clear: the U-21 team directly prepares players for the senior national team, and the experience Mykhailenko gained working with youth should continue at the next level. The only question is whether U-19 will lose continuity of approach when leadership passes to a person without recent coaching experience at the youth level.
Spain as a Test, Euro 2027 as the Goal
Luzhny's debut in the position will be indicative: in September, the team will play three friendly matches at a tournament in Spain — against Sweden, Germany, and Scotland. These are not simply warm-up games for appearances, but an opportunity to see how the new coaching staff builds play under limited preparation time.
The real test will come later. In November, the U-19 national team will continue its qualification for the 2027 European Championship, where in the second group stage the opponents will be Italy, Israel, and Romania. Italy and Romania are teams with strong football traditions, so the results of these specific matches will show whether the decision to entrust the national team to a person who has spent recent years doing more administrative work than coaching was justified.
Luzhny has coaching experience — he worked with Kyiv's Dynamo, Simferopol's Tavria, and Lviv's Karpaty. However, this is experience from a different era and a different level of teams. Whether he can transfer managerial experience to daily work with the youth team will become clear from the results of the autumn qualification series.
