Lenovo returns to gaming smartphones after four years of silence — and the market is no longer the same

The new Legion Y70 2026 enters a niche that competitors have largely abandoned. Lenovo is betting on AI-gaming and ecosystem integration — but has yet to confirm either the processor or target markets.

In April 2026, Lenovo officially confirmed the return of the Legion line to the smartphone segment for the first time since 2022. The company published the first renders of the Legion Y70 2026 and announced an estimated start of sales in May 2026 — four years after it discontinued the previous model just six months after its release.

A shrinking market

When the Legion Y70 debuted in August 2022, buyers had options: ASUS ROG Phone, RedMagic, Black Shark, Lenovo — a distinct segment with real competition. As Phandroid notes, currently in the United States only RedMagic officially sells gaming smartphones. The rest either left the market or repositioned themselves. Lenovo is returning to a significantly less crowded niche — and this is either a strategic advantage or a trap.

What's visible in the renders — and what's unconfirmed

In the official images — a rectangular camera module with three lenses, stylistically similar to the Motorola Edge 70, subtle texture on the back panel like the Legion Tab Gen 5, two colors: black and white. The main sensor is likely 50 MP. According to Notebookcheck, the smartphone was spotted at a Chinese event in March, where its characteristic camera island was recognized.

The key mystery is the processor. One Weibo user directly asked whether it would have the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Lenovo responded that the device would "live up to expectations," but did not confirm specifics. Notebookcheck considers the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 the most likely option — it's what would make the Y70 2026 a direct competitor to the RedMagic 11 Pro.

AI-gaming as the main message

In a Weibo post, Lenovo emphasized that the new phone was created for the "era of AI-gaming." As Android Police writes, the company promises that artificial intelligence will be employed in managing game controls and performance management — that is, not as a marketing label, but as a functional layer between hardware and the game. How much of this is actually implemented remains unclear.

"The entire Lenovo Legion ecosystem is ready" — that's how the company described its strategy, hinting at integration with Legion laptops, tablets, and accessories.

Main unknowns before launch

  • Sales markets: the previous Y70 was released only in China and didn't reach the West. The new model currently has no confirmed global release.
  • Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 — expectation, not fact.
  • Price: no data. In 2022, the Y70 started at ¥2499 (~$350) — positioned below ASUS ROG.
  • Cooling: the previous Y70 had an active cooling system as a key feature; whether it will be retained is unknown.

If Lenovo confirms a global release and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at a price below $600 — the niche left by Black Shark is open. If there's no international release again, the Legion Y70 2026 will remain a prestige product for the domestic market.

The conflict between the two agencies reveals a deeper problem: who and under what conditions should carry out the most unpopular part of mobilization.
