Google may increase the maximum digital zoom level in the base Pixel 11 to 30x. This is indicated by new marketing materials published by insider Evan Blass. Last year's Pixel 10 had a limit of 20x — so the increase is substantial on paper.
However, there's a practical nuance worth understanding before making a purchase: previous leaks suggest that the base model won't receive the new telephoto lens, which allegedly is only being prepared for Pro versions. This means that 30x in Pixel 11 and 30x in Pixel 11 Pro are probably two completely different things in terms of image quality.
What the "30x" figure actually delivers
When zoom increases without a new sensor or optics, the result is provided by algorithms — Super Res Zoom, frame cropping, computational processing. This works, but has its limits: at distant distances and in low light, the difference between "true" optical magnification and software-based zooming becomes noticeable to the naked eye, especially when trying to discern fine details or text.
For the buyer, this means one simple thing: the number on the box no longer guarantees the same result between models in the same product line. You need to check whether there's a hardware telephoto lens, not just the declared maximum zoom.
Camera as part of Gemini
Besides zoom, the base Pixel 11 will receive camera integration with Gemini Live — the smartphone will be able to analyze objects in the frame in real time and use the context of previous conversations to automatically formulate responses in messages. This continues the trend of the past two years: Google is competing less and less through optics alone and increasingly through what its software neural network does with the image.
Four body colors have also been confirmed: Midnight, Fuchsia, Moss, and Sterling.
If the base model is catching up to Pro in declared zoom only thanks to software, the main question for the August 12 presentation is whether Google will show image quality comparisons between product lines at the same distance, rather than just specifications.
The official announcement of the Pixel 11 series — Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold — is expected on August 12 at the Made by Google event in New York.
