Switch 2 launched with LCD and ghosting problem — OLED could be the fix, but not before 2028

Nintendo is considering an OLED version of the Switch 2 with 1080p resolution — and this isn't just an upgrade for upgrade's sake: the current LCD screen is already being criticized for blurriness and ghosting effects.

When Nintendo released Switch 2 in June 2025, fans received a console with a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen and 120 Hz support. But complaints appeared almost immediately: the slow response time of the Innolux panel leaves a "tail" behind moving objects — an effect known as ghosting. The same hardware that provides progress in resolution compared to the original Switch turned out to be a step backward in image quality relative to the 2021 Switch OLED.

What Nintendo is doing right now

The company is acting on two levels. Software: a system firmware patch partially fixed HDR color reproduction, which looked washed out at launch. Hardware: a new LCD module from Sharp with the marking LS079T1SX10P has already appeared online — with reworked circuitry and a different connector. According to Notebookcheck, this panel maintains the same 7.9 inches and 1080p, but is designed to fix the ghosting problem at the hardware level. There is no official confirmation from Nintendo.

In parallel, the company announced a new version of Switch 2 with a replaceable battery for fall 2025 — another pain point of the current model.

OLED version: conditions and timeline

According to ZDNet Korea, Nintendo is considering a fundamentally different response to criticism — a Switch 2 OLED with a hard panel of 1920×1080. If the project is approved, development will start at the end of 2026, mass production — at the end of 2027 or early 2028.

But between "considering" and "will release" — there is a significant obstacle. As Android Authority notes, there is a significant price difference between LCD and OLED panels, against the backdrop of rising costs of semiconductors and memory. The decision has not yet been made.

Why this matters now, not in 2028

Current complaints about ghosting are not subjective impressions: this is a systemic problem with the slow response time of the Innolux panel. Critics compare it to LCD screens from around 2009. For a console positioned as Nintendo's flagship, this is a reputational risk.

  • Switch OLED 2021: 7.0 inches, 720p — and better response time and contrast than Switch 2 2025
  • Switch 2 LCD: 7.9 inches, 1080p, 120 Hz — but ghosting and weak HDR in handheld mode
  • Switch 2 OLED (if released): 7.9 inches, 1080p — potentially without these problems

Nintendo's cycle is well-known: original Switch — 2017, Lite — 2019, OLED — 2021. Switch 2 OLED in 2028 fits the same logic of revision every two to three years.

The question is not whether an OLED version will be released — it is almost inevitable given this logic. The question is whether Nintendo will fix ghosting in current units through the Sharp panel before the official announcement of the next model — or leave 2025 buyers waiting for a solution they will have to pay extra for.
