Xiaomi 17 Max: 200-MP Samsung HP9 sensor, 8,000 mAh battery and price starting from $705

Xiaomi officially unveiled the Xiaomi 17 Max — the flagship model of the series, which focuses on record-breaking battery capacity and a Leica camera with Samsung's 200-megapixel HP9 sensor. This is more than just a larger screen: the company has reconsidered the compromise between size and battery life.

Xiaomi 17 Max is the fourth device in the Xiaomi 17 series, and according to the company's concept, it occupies a niche between the Ultra photo flagship and the standard 17 Pro Max. The main difference lies not in the processor or screen, but in the combination of a record-breaking battery with a full-fledged Leica camera system.

Camera: Samsung HP9 and Leica's first "2-billion pixel mode"

The main sensor is the Samsung HP9 with a resolution of 200 MP, a size of 1/1.4 inches, an aperture of f/1.65, and OIS. Dynamic range reaches up to 13.5 EV. According to GSMArena, the HP9 supports multi-frame merging in 2 billion pixel mode — a result of computational photography rather than a physical sensor with such resolution.

Alongside the main camera is a 50 MP periscope telephoto lens with 3× support for macro photography, and a 50 MP ultra-wide lens with a 17 mm equivalent. All three lenses were calibrated jointly with Leica.

Battery: 8,000 mAh with silicon-carbon cathode

Xiaomi Jinshajiang is a battery with silicon content up to 16% and energy density of 894 Wh/L. It supports 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. For comparison: the standard Xiaomi 17 has 6,330 mAh, meaning the Max battery is 26% larger.

Platform and Display

  • Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
  • RAM: up to 16 GB LPDDR5X, storage up to 512 GB UFS 4.1
  • Display: 6.9″ AMOLED, 2608 × 1200 pixels, 120 Hz, up to 3,500 nits
  • Front camera: 32 MP, ultrasonic under-display scanner
  • Protection: IP68 + IP69
  • OS: HyperOS 3 based on Android 16

Pricing and Availability

Sales in China started on May 25. The base configuration with 12/256 GB costs 4,799 yuan (~$705), while the top-tier 16/512 GB model costs 5,799 yuan (~$853). The starting price after government subsidies is 4,299 yuan. An official launch in markets outside China has not been confirmed, but according to sources, India is being considered as the next market.

The question is not whether the 200 MP sensor is technically justified — the answer depends on whether Xiaomi 17 Max will enter the European market with the same pricing logic: if the euro conversion remains at the level of ~€610–735 without significant markup, the "large flagship" category will gain a real competitor to the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
