Kononnikov took command of the 154th Brigade in June 2025 — after its first commander, Colonel Alexander Shcherbyna, left his post. According to MilitaryLand, Shcherbyna commanded the unit from its establishment in October 2023 and fought with the brigade on the Pokrovsk, Vovchansk, and Kupiansk fronts.

What is known about the brigade

The 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade is one of five new mechanized brigades formed in autumn 2023. Its equipment includes American M1117 armored vehicles, T-64BV tanks, and infantry fighting vehicles. In August 2025, the unit was transferred to the 16th Army Corps, concentrated in the Kharkiv region. According to MilitaryLand, the brigade's personnel were gradually redistributed among other units, which raised questions about its continued existence as a separate unit.

What remains unknown

  • Location where the body was found — Operational Command "South" did not specify where exactly the colonel was found: in the combat zone or in the rear.
  • Cause of death — the preliminary absence of signs of violence does not rule out other versions; the final conclusion depends on the results of the investigation.
  • Who temporarily commands the brigade — there is no information about the acting commander.

The death of a brigade commander under non-combat circumstances is an event that rarely occurs in the Ukrainian army and almost always triggers a service investigation. The question is whether the results will be made public: if it was an accident — there is precedent for it; if something else — the army rarely goes beyond official statements.
