In Chernivtsi, vandals destroyed an outdoor cinema that organizers of the "Mykolaichu OPEN" festival set up in October Park. Police opened an investigation and are identifying the individuals involved in the intentional property damage.
The structure was built specifically for this year's festival — dedicated to Ukrainian cinema and the memory of actor and director Ivan Mykolaichu. The outdoor venue was meant to be the central location for open-air screenings. According to the organizers, the damage was intentional: someone deliberately dismantled or broke structural elements.
Despite the incident, the festival team stated that all events will proceed according to schedule. The venue is being restored in an expedited manner.
It is notable that this attack on cultural infrastructure occurs during a full-scale war, when festivals like "Mykolaichu OPEN" remain one of the few public spaces where Ukrainian cinema exists beyond streaming and home screens. Destroying the venue means striking not just at boards and canvas, but at the very idea of communal viewing in a city where air raid sirens have already become background noise.
Police have not yet named suspects or reported whether surveillance cameras captured the incident.
If the investigation identifies the perpetrators — will there be sufficient evidence for an actual conviction, rather than another closed proceeding?
