On the evening of June 29, Kyiv was hit by a storm in three phases: first, winds sharply intensified and whipped up a dust storm, then came heavy rain with thunderstorms. All this followed several days of 30-degree heat that had already strained the grid before a single drop of rain fell.

What was recorded on the streets

Gusty wind gusts toppled trees in various districts of the city — some fell on parked cars. A billboard fell on Stepan Bandera Prospect. Torn roofs and downed poles were also reported.

The downpour caused flooding on certain streets and in courtyards. According to eyewitnesses, rainwater leaked directly into a subway car. Some residents took shelter from the elements in underground stations.

"DTEK emergency crews have been switched to enhanced mode and are working 24/7 to promptly address any possible emergencies."

Where the power went out

Power outages were recorded on the left bank and in the Obolon district. Later, reports came in from the right bank as well. DTEK switched to enhanced mode and called on subscribers to conserve electricity to avoid overloading an already strained grid — the next day, June 30, Ukrenergo had already announced the resumption of blackout schedules.

Official response

Level I (yellow) alert status was declared in Kyiv and Kyiv Region. The Kyiv City State Administration urged people not to stay near trees, billboards, and power lines during the storm, as well as not to leave cars near them. Meteorologists had warned about difficult weather conditions on June 29–30 throughout much of Ukraine.

Separately, damage to facade insulation in one of the apartment buildings was reported — details are being clarified by municipal services.

If on June 30 the grid fails to recover before the morning peak consumption, and Ukrenergo introduces planned blackout schedules, residents on the left bank could spend a significant portion of the day without electricity in a row: first due to emergency outages, then due to scheduled ones.

War

Two women — an unemployed woman from Sumy region and a former confectioner from Sevastopol who was recruited through debt — acted separately from each other and nearly blew up a ZSU military vehicle in the pedestrian zone of Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The first one made a bomb following a video instruction from Russia, the second was supposed to install it — but the Security Service of Ukraine detected a GPS tracker on the vehicle before the operation could be executed.
