70 killed in five days: UN records largest geographic scope of strikes since start of full-scale invasion

From May 1 to 5, Russia struck 14 regions of Ukraine — there are civilian casualties in each one. The UN monitoring mission says that the combination of scale and geography causes "particular concern."

Over five days in May — from May 1 to 5, 2025 — at least 70 civilians in Ukraine were killed, with over 500 wounded. These figures were documented by the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine — which emphasized that casualties occurred in all 14 regions that came under attack.

May 5: the bloodiest day of the week

A single day — May 5 — resulted in 28 deaths and 194 wounded. Three cities came under fire practically simultaneously: in Zaporizhzhia, airstrikes and drones killed 12 people and wounded 37, in Kramatorsk, an airstrike in the city center claimed 5 lives and injured 13, in Dnipro, missile strikes killed at least 4 people and ignited an industrial facility. President Zelenskyy called the strike on Zaporizhzhia a "cynical terrorist act with no military purpose whatsoever."

"Particular concern is raised both by the scale of civilian casualties and by the scope of damage over just a few days."

Danièle Bell, Head of the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine

Tactics of simultaneous strikes across multiple directions

The strike on Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, and Kramatorsk in a single wave — this is more than just casualty figures. As Prism News notes, simultaneous coverage of multiple areas forces Ukrainian air defense forces to stretch across targets, complicates rescue logistics, and increases the burden on regional hospitals. The very combination of depth and breadth of strikes — from frontline Kramatorsk to Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro — characterizes the May wave.

The broader trend is confirmed by wider UN statistics: according to the Monitoring Mission report, the number of civilian casualties from December 2024 to May 2025 increased by 37% compared to the same period the previous year — 968 deaths and 4,807 wounded over six months.

Context: diplomacy and strikes simultaneously

The May attacks occurred against the backdrop of discussions about a possible ceasefire around Victory Day on May 9. Strikes on the civilian infrastructure of three regional centers in a single day — an argument that Kyiv used in communications with partners: negotiations on a ceasefire were unfolding while the daily reality for civilians remained unchanged.

  • 14 regions reported civilian casualties from May 1 to 5
  • 28 deaths — on May 5 alone, the worst single-day figure for this period
  • +37% — increase in civilian casualties compared to December 2023 to May 2024

If May 2025 ends at the pace documented in the first five days, it could become the deadliest month for civilians since the beginning of the full-scale invasion — the question is whether this statistic will change the position of those partners who have so far blocked the expansion of long-range air defense system supplies.
