Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited the Kremlin and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the conversation Orbán stated that Budapest is prepared to provide a venue for negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Proposal for a summit
The parties discussed the situation in Ukraine, bilateral relations and the possibility of holding a Russian‑American summit in Budapest. According to Putin, the initiative comes from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Position on Ukraine
Putin described Orbán’s approach to the Ukrainian issue as balanced and noted that Moscow values Budapest’s moderate stance. He emphasized the possibility of an open dialogue to seek solutions.
Orbán confirmed his intention to create conditions for negotiations on settling the conflict and stressed the pragmatic character of Hungary’s policy in relations with Russia.
Energy cooperation
The talks also touched on energy cooperation. Orbán noted that Hungary values the stability of energy supplies from Russia and is interested in continuing dialogue in this area.
The prime minister emphasized that Russian exports have provided Hungary with some of the lowest energy prices in Europe. Before departing for Moscow he added that he intends to continue importing oil and gas, resisting external pressure and maintaining pragmatic relations with Russia.
Orbán’s trip to Moscow was focused on energy matters and peace efforts in connection with Russia’s war against Ukraine.
