Two names on the scoreboard in Paris — and behind them very different stories. Kseniia Bailo, for whom this is already the 14th medal at European Championships, and 17-year-old Sofiia Vistavkina, who is competing at an adult continental tournament for the first time in her life. Together, in just minutes, they became bronze medalists in synchronized diving from a 10-meter platform.
There were no preliminary qualifications in this discipline — the newly formed Ukrainian pair went straight to the final among seven teams, without a warm-up round and without the safety net of a selection round. This means that each dive immediately had the weight of a medal on it, not just a qualifying score.
One dive decided everything
The decisive moment in the fight for medals came on the fourth dive by the Ukrainian athletes — three and a half somersaults in a pike position. For its execution, the girls received 75.84 points — the highest score among all the dives performed in the final. It was this dive that allowed the Ukrainians to climb into the top three. After the final dive, the girls maintained their bronze position.
In the end, the Ukrainian duo scored 286.20 points. The champions were representatives of Great Britain (300.06), and the silver medal went to the German team (298.20).
The difference between first and third place is less than 14 points over the entire final. In synchronized diving, where the synchronization of two bodies and the technique of each individual are evaluated simultaneously in a second, this is the distance of one failed entry into the water.
Experience versus debut
For Kseniia Bailo, this is already her second medal at this year's European Championships after bronze in the mixed team competition, and 14 overall at continental championships (6 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze). Meanwhile, 17-year-old Sofiia Vistavkina won a medal at her debut adult European Championships.
It is this combination — an experienced champion able to keep her nerve in a final without qualifications, and a young athlete who has not yet accumulated fear of major competitions — that produced a result from the very first joint appearance of the duo on the international platform.
