Kyiv does not plan to ease the curfew over the New Year holidays

The military command will decide on the duration of the curfew. For now, lifting or shortening nighttime restrictions on December 25 and December 31–January 1 is not being considered due to security risks. The main Christmas tree will be funded by patrons.

Curfew regime

The question of the curfew’s duration on the eve of Christmas and New Year falls within the competence of the military command. At meetings of the city’s Defense Council, proposals to cancel or shorten the nighttime restrictions for the night of December 25 and the night from December 31 to January 1 have not been considered. Based on the results of previous years and taking into account existing threats, neither general nor targeted changes are expected.

The decision on the duration of the curfew will be made by the military command, taking into account the current and forecast security situation ahead of Christmas and the New Year

Restrictions and responsibility

In Kyiv, the curfew is in effect from 00:00 to 05:00 in accordance with the order of the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration. During this time it is prohibited to be on the streets and in public places, as well as to travel by vehicle or on foot without a special pass.

You may go out only to reach the nearest shelter in the event of an air-raid alert. Violators of the curfew’s rules and restrictions will be detained and brought to units of the National Police of Ukraine

Kyiv CMA spokeswoman Kateryna Pop said that at this stage no submissions to cancel or reduce the curfew have been submitted for consideration by the Defense Council.

At present the issue of canceling or reducing the curfew on the night of December 25 and on the night from December 31 to January 1 has not been raised. Relevant submissions for consideration at a meeting of the Defense Council have not been provided

Furthermore, based on previous years’ practice and taking threats into account, neither localized nor general changes to the curfew regime are currently planned

According to Pop, regular attacks on civilian infrastructure by Russian forces and the terrorist nature of the aggression make changes to the regime dangerous. She emphasized that the potential harm to residents from allowing mass movement at night would outweigh the public importance of festive events.

Festive location and funding

The decision on the location of the main New Year’s tree and the format of the celebrations will be made after coordination with the command of the capital’s defense forces in view of the security level. This year’s city budget does not provide funds for holding festivities or for installing the tree.

The tree is planned to be installed at Sophia Square. Costs for installation, decoration, and organization of the festive location will be covered by patrons, who will also be responsible for running the events.
