52-year-old woman detained in Kyiv over false report of an explosion

A 52-year-old woman from Kyiv phoned in a threat that she would detonate a grenade in the administrative building of one of the capital’s police departments. She was detained; investigators have announced suspicion under Part 2 of Article 259 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which carries a sentence of up to eight years’ imprisonment.

The Kyiv police detained a 52-year-old woman who phoned to report an intention to detonate a grenade in the administrative building of one of the city's police departments.

How the incident unfolded

The incident occurred on December 1. Response services received a call from a woman who reported that an explosion was being prepared at one of the police departments; the information was passed to the relevant units for verification.

Investigators established that the call was made by a 52-year-old Kyiv resident who, at the time of the report, was in her apartment. Police searched her residence and found no explosive devices.

During questioning, the woman could not explain the reason for her report.

Criminal consequences

Investigators detained the suspect in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code and notified her of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 259 of the Criminal Code — knowingly false reporting of the preparation of an explosion when the object indicated is a building that houses state authorities.

Under this article, the penalty is up to eight years' imprisonment.
