The Verdict and Its Significance
Today’s court decision is not only about the length of the sentence but also about how society and law-enforcement institutions respond to cases when disregarding traffic rules costs human lives. The Holosiivskyi District Court of Kyiv found a 22-year-old resident guilty in a fatal road crash that occurred in November 2023 on Staro-Kyivska Street. The verdict follows the deaths of two people and awards of financial compensation to their families.
Case Details
According to the prosecution, the woman got behind the wheel of an Audi while intoxicated. A few minutes before the accident her acquaintance had been driving; during the incident the driver moved into the oncoming lane and collided with a Toyota. As a result, the 40-year-old driver and a 39-year-old passenger of the oncoming car died. Preliminary information indicates she was 20 years old at the time of the crash and is now 22.
After the collision the driver and her passenger went to a private hospital, from which they later fled; they were subsequently detained. Investigators also established that both the woman and the man had previously been stripped of the right to drive due to administrative offences under Article 130 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offences (КУпАП).

Sentence and Consequences
The court found the woman guilty under Part 4 of Article 286‑1 and Part 1 of Article 382 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced her to 11 years imprisonment with a concurrent deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for 10 years. Her passenger, who handed her the keys and was subject to the relevant prohibitions, was given 4 years imprisonment with a 3-year probationary period. In addition, the defendant must compensate the relatives of the deceased UAH 5.3 million.
Why This Matters
This case highlights several important points: firstly, the danger posed by intoxicated drivers; secondly, that ignoring court bans can have fatal consequences; and thirdly, that the justice system can hold offenders accountable even when they try to avoid the consequences (going to a hospital and then fleeing).
For each of us, it is a reminder of the price of safe behaviour on the roads — and that “impunity” often leads to the gravest losses. Whether this verdict will change the practice of responding to similar offences is a question for law enforcement agencies and society.
