Balaban: Wing-interceptor from Phantom Defense — part of a system that has already shot down 7,000 drones

Phantom Defense unveiled Balaban at Brave1 Advantage — a fixed-wing interceptor drone capable of speeds up to 260 km/h, which serves as a kinetic component of a broader counter-drone ecosystem that has been battle-tested in protecting a Ukrainian city.

Phantom Defense — a Ukrainian company specializing in counter-drone systems — demonstrated the interceptor drone Balaban at the Brave1 Advantage event. The aircraft is designed according to a "flying wing" scheme and is intended for intercepting reconnaissance and strike UAVs.

What is known about its characteristics

According to the company, Balaban reaches a maximum speed of 260 km/h and can remain airborne for up to 2.5 hours. The payload capacity is up to 1.2 kg, allowing it to carry kinetic or net equipment for physical target destruction. The company did not disclose details regarding autonomous guidance and range.

Balaban — not a standalone product, but part of an ecosystem

At Eurosatory 2026 in Paris, Phantom Defense demonstrated how Balaban integrates into a broader "Detect–Defeat" architecture: data from radars, ELINT sensors, and the Streamhunter video interception system flow to a unified command platform (C2), which creates an operational picture and supports operator decisions. The kinetic interceptor Balaban and the multi-rotor Blade serve as the executive elements of this chain.

"There are more drones, they are becoming more complex, their control logic is becoming increasingly sophisticated. That is why our vision is to build a comprehensive counter-UAV ecosystem"

Combat statistics: one city, 7,000 drones

The company claims its systems have already seen combat use. According to Phantom Defense representatives, the technologies were deployed as part of a project to protect urban infrastructure in one of Ukraine's regional centers, where operators neutralized over 7,000 enemy drones. Independent confirmation of this figure from the Armed Forces of Ukraine or ISW has not been publicly provided.

Context: the interceptor market is becoming competitive

Balaban enters a market where several fixed-wing competitors already exist. MaXon Systems developed a ground-based interceptor costing $3,500 with autonomous guidance elements. General Cherry presented a jet-powered Bullet with AI guidance. Phantom Defense is betting not on unit cost reduction, but on integration: Balaban without the accompanying C2 platform and Skydarix radar is just a fast aircraft.

Notably, the company is actively entering international exhibitions — Brave1 Advantage, Eurosatory 2026, SAHA 2026 — which indicates an intention to attract not only Ukrainian but also foreign contracts. After Ukrainian interceptors were demonstrated in Jordan during the Iran-Israel conflict, demand for such systems outside Ukraine has genuinely increased.

If Phantom Defense publishes independently verified results of Balaban's combat use separately from the rest of the ecosystem — this will become a decisive argument for foreign customers interested in the kinetic component rather than the full package.
