On the morning of June 5, on the territory of a sorting center of a postal operator in the Obolon district of Kyiv, a package exploded during its inspection. A 59-year-old man died — presumably a center employee. Two other people, aged 37 and 41, were injured. Police did not specify details of their condition.

What law enforcement established

An investigative-operative group, bomb disposal experts from Kyiv police, rescuers from the State Emergency Service, and medical personnel are working at the scene. According to the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, the explosion was provisionally qualified under Part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — a terrorist act that resulted in loss of life. Pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the SBU Main Directorate in Kyiv and Kyiv Region under the procedural supervision of the prosecutor's office.

Not the first incident

This is already the second similar incident at Kyiv postal facilities in less than a year. On October 30, 2025, a package exploded at a sorting center of Ukrposhta in the Solomyansky district, which was being processed for export. Five people were injured then — two customs officers and three postal workers. Law enforcement managed to identify the sender of that package operatively. Whether there is a connection between the two incidents has not been officially confirmed.

On June 3, two days before this event, enemy drones destroyed a Nova Poshta terminal in Dnipro — but that strike was not of ground origin. The coincidence in timing is being noted, and the investigation will draw conclusions.

Tactical context

The use of postal shipments as a means of delivering explosive devices is a documented practice of Russian intelligence services in Ukrainian-controlled territory. Two explosions at Kyiv sorting centers within eight months indicate either systemic vulnerability in inspection procedures or a deliberate attempt to test them. Neither version excludes the other.

  • Deceased: man, 59 years old, identity being established
  • Injured: two men, aged 37 and 41
  • Qualification: Part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code — terrorism with fatal consequences
  • Investigation: SBU Main Directorate in Kyiv and Kyiv Region

If the investigation manages to identify the sender as quickly as in October 2025, there will be grounds to speak of a serial nature of the attacks and a single operational chain. If not, the question of why inspection procedures were not changed after the first incident will remain unanswered.
