Most celebrity confessions about partners boil down to the banal "she supports me." Tom Holland on the podcast Good Hang With Amy Poehler formulated it differently — and therein lies the difference.
"Safety net" — not a metaphor
According to Holland, working in the film industry is like constantly balancing between filming, where the actor feels in his element, and press tours, where he's "like standing on stage under spotlights." It's in these transitions, he says, that you need a person who understands the pressure from within.
"It's so good to have someone nearby who understands it so personally. You can calm each other down or cheer each other up. It's a safety net. I really can't imagine doing what I do without her."
— Tom Holland, Good Hang With Amy Poehler podcast
The key here — it's not romance, but shared professional context. Holland directly said: a partner in the same industry understands the pressure differently than someone from outside.
Specific case: a scene rewritten right on set
On the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland and Zendaya stopped work after a few hours and told director Destin Daniel Cretton that the scene "just isn't working." As Holland told Variety, Cretton sent the entire crew home, and they rewrote the material together. The next day, the scene was shot again.
Holland admitted: he likely wouldn't have dared to stop filming if Zendaya hadn't been there. Her presence gave him the confidence to speak up.
Why he considers her the best actress
Holland separately explained what impresses him about Zendaya's approach to roles. He compared her Rue from Euphoria and Emma from The Drama — and noted that in both cases there's "no less intention, passion and drive," despite completely different characters.
- "She's just absolutely committed" — Holland called this trait contagious: watching her on set, he himself changes his approach to work.
- "She's fearless" — a separate emphasis he made in the podcast: not "talented," but specifically fearless.
- "I think she's the best actress right now" — without reservations, without "maybe."
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2025. That's when it will become clear whether the reshot scene really "sings in the film" — as Holland assures — or if it was just a good story for the podcast.
