A Drone Invisible to Electronic Warfare
The main problem with fiber optic FPV is that it is not controlled via radio channel, but through a thin cable trailing behind the drone. No signal — nothing to jam. All the billions invested in electronic warfare systems over the past two years work only partially, at best, against such a drone. This is why Kharkiv is returning to methods that seem archaic: nets, observers, fire groups. It is the same principle as the air defense of London in the 1940s — a physical obstacle where electronics is powerless.
What Exactly They Are Testing
Kharkiv Regional Military Administration head Oleh Synehubov told Radio Hartiya that in one district of the city they have been testing a combined system for a week: anti-drone nets combined with "active defense" — mobile groups that physically shoot down drones. The development is being carried out by the Regional Military Administration and the Second Corps of the National Guard "Hartiya". According to Synehubov, the technology is not new — it already works at the front, now it is being adapted to dense urban development, where the logic of fire lines is different and the height of buildings is limited.
Three Defensive Lines Instead of One
Passive defense consists of nets on Kharkiv's ring road and on Kharkiv Highway from the ring road to the intersection with Akademika Proskury Street. Next — additional mobile fire groups as the second line of defense. And the third — the actual "active defense," the essence of which is not yet being revealed in detail, as this is an active experiment, not a finished solution.
Timeline of the Threat
The first fiber optic drone reached Kharkiv on February 25. In summer, such incidents began to be recorded more regularly. Each subsequent incident confirms that the enemy is scaling a technology that bypasses the city's existing defense measures.
Dome or Patch
Synehubov speaks plainly: if the experiment succeeds, it will be scaled to the entire city — a "dome of protection from fiber optic FPV drones" around Kharkiv. Currently, the project is funded by the regional budget; in case of success, United24 and other sources will be involved. But the key word here is "if". Nets on the ring road represent kilometers of infrastructure that must be installed, maintained, and repaired after each attack. The question is not whether the technology will work in one district during a week of testing, but whether the budget and logistics can support scaling across a million-person city before the enemy finds a way to circumvent this as well.
