What happened on 28 March 2022

Today is the fourth anniversary of the liberation of Irpin. The fighting for the city resulted in losses: 42 territorial defense fighters, 50 servicemembers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and more than 300 civilians. These are official figures from local authorities, which remind us of the human cost of liberation and the need for systematic reconstruction.

"On 28 March 2022 the whole world saw that Irpin was destroyed, but unbowed. Irpin stood firm once and for all and became a symbol of the indomitability of all Ukraine. Today we all remember and bow our heads with gratitude before everyone who gave their life for our right to be in Irpin today."

— Oleksandr Pashchynskyi, first deputy mayor of Irpin

Remembrance and events today

Commemorative events will take place in the community near the key sites of the fighting. Come to the checkpoints: «Жираф», «Караван-Гала», «Водоканал», «Міст життя», «Синергія» — the places where volunteers and defenders rescued people and animals, evacuated the wounded and held back the advance.

"Come to the sites of our battle for Irpin: the checkpoints «Жираф», «Караван-Гала», «Водоканал», «Міст життя», «Синергія». Thank today our guys and volunteers who defended our city, who under fire evacuated people and animals, who fought for their home."

— Anzhela Makeieva, acting mayor of Irpin

Why this matters

The memory of Irpin is not only a tribute to the fallen. It is a marker of social resilience and an argument to partners: restoring infrastructure, supporting veterans and risk-reduction programs must become priorities. Security experts and veterans call Irpin an example of how the combination of citizen mobility, volunteerism and the professional work of the army can change the balance of power at the local level.

Today's events strengthen social cohesion and remind us that reconstruction is a long-term process. If you have photos or testimonies from those days, share them: this memory is important for future generations and so that the lessons of Irpin become part of the national security strategy.
