Student No Longer Stands in Line at the Checkout: How Railways Will Verify Benefit Purchased Online

Ukrainian Railways has allowed the purchase of discounted tickets for suburban trains and Kyiv City Express through the mobile app — but the real issue is not the purchase itself, but whether a conductor can verify the discount without a physical student ID.

Ukrzaliznytsia has opened online sales of discounted tickets for students on commuter trains and Kyiv City Express. The service operates in 19 regions — where there is coverage by the UZ mobile application for commuter traffic.

How it works in practice

The purchase algorithm is simple: in the app, you select a route in the "Commuter" or "Kyiv City Express" section, choose "Student" instead of a full ticket, enter the series and number of your student ID, click "add benefit" and pay. The discount is applied automatically at payment — not after, not at boarding.

The benefit applies to students of universities, institutes, academies and vocational school students. It is valid from October to June — student discounts do not work in summer.

What actually changed

Previously, a student either stood in a queue at the ticket office or bought a full ticket online and paid the difference. Now the benefit is fixed before boarding — this eliminates the conflict of "bought online, but no discount."

"An important point — the benefit discount is applied at the time of payment"

In parallel, another system operates: Ukrzaliznytsia already accepts a digital student ID from the "Diia" application as grounds for a discount — without the plastic original. A CMU resolution No. 1051 from 2019 gives legal force to such a document.

Where the gap is

The student enters the series and number of their ID independently — the system checks the data against the Unified State Electronic Database of Education (YEDEBO). But in regions where controllers do not yet have terminals for digital verification, the check remains manual: the passenger shows a physical or digital student ID, and the controller checks the number visually.

  • 19 regions — current coverage of online benefits in the app
  • 50% discount — the size of the benefit on commuter routes
  • October–June — the only operating period for student benefits
  • YEDEBO — the database through which the system verifies student status

If UZ integrates verification through Diia directly into the terminals of commuter train controllers by the end of 2025 — the online benefit will become completely seamless. Until this happens, a student with a ticket purchased in the app must still carry proof of their student status.
