British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will meet with US President Donald Trump next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. One of the agenda items will be a request to unblock part of American Patriot air defense missile stocks for transfer to Ukraine before winter begins.
According to Bloomberg, strengthening Ukraine's air defense is one of Burnham's priorities at these negotiations. The British prime minister also plans to discuss the situation in the Middle East and the possible role of European countries in reducing tensions in the region with Trump.
A Question That Has Been Pressing Since Summer
Burnham announced his intention to secure access to American Patriot systems back in August. The issue gained additional weight ahead of the autumn-winter period, when the intensity of Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure traditionally increases.
The problem is complicated by the overall state of US production capacity. Earlier, Washington warned allies about possible delays in delivery of air defense missiles of up to five years — this concerns global demand, not just the Ukrainian direction, but directly affects the pace at which Kyiv can receive additional systems.
Meanwhile, the United States has already approved a separate sale to Ukraine of air defense systems worth $2.68 billion — the deal concerns not the Patriot missiles themselves, but auxiliary equipment and maintenance of existing systems.
British Context of the Negotiations
Burnham's position in negotiations with Trump is being shaped against the backdrop of economic difficulties within Britain itself. The government fears that escalation in the Middle East could push energy prices higher, intensify inflation, and increase government borrowing costs.
Burnham's cabinet's first budget is scheduled to be presented on October 28. According to Bloomberg, the government will have to find a way to close a fiscal reserve deficit of at least 12 billion pounds — this factor limits the space for London's own defense initiatives and raises the stakes for the success of negotiations with Washington over American missiles.
Providing Ukraine with additional air defense means is one of Burnham's priorities in negotiations with the US president, Bloomberg sources report.
The outcome of the meeting in New York will depend on whether Washington agrees to allocate part of the scarce Patriot missiles to Ukraine despite its own production constraints and requests from other allies — the answer will become clear in the coming weeks, before the start of the heating season.
