Obolon District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv has submitted an indictment to court against a 56-year-old Kyivan woman under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — cruel treatment of animals resulting in the death of an animal. The sanction provides for up to three years imprisonment.
What the investigation established
According to Kyiv Prosecutor's Office materials, the woman for an extended period kept a wild wolf, a fox, and several dogs in her apartment on Obolon. The conditions were critical: the wolf was confined to a cramped cage, different predator species coexisted in one enclosed space without veterinary supervision and necessary care.
In parallel, the woman maintained social media accounts where she posted videos with the animals. These very materials became part of the evidence base — they document the housing conditions.

The outcome: wolf attacked the owner
In December 2025, the wolf attacked its owner, injuring her arm and thigh. After this, the woman herself contacted animal rights activists — the predator was seized. During an examination of the apartment, investigators found the body of a fox. Forensic examination documented injuries of light to moderate severity on the animal's body.
The pre-trial investigation also established the origin of wild animals — the wolf and fox are objects of wild fauna, the keeping of which in captivity without special permission is prohibited under Ukrainian animal protection legislation.
Legal framework
Article 299 of the Criminal Code provides for liability for cruel treatment of vertebrate animals if it resulted in bodily injuries, mutilation, or death of an animal. For Part 1 — restriction of liberty from one to three years or imprisonment from two to three years with animal confiscation. The charge regarding an "apartment menagerie" itself is a precedent: most cases under Article 299 concern beating or incitement of animals, not housing conditions per se.
